3 Tips to Manage Knee Pain

Knee pain is one of the most common complaints we see at our physiotherapy clinic is Stewarton. Here are some tips to keep you active without having the worry about knee pain!

  • Be sensible when introducing something new or doing more than your “normal” - something we see so frequently is people dramatically increasing their activity levels over a short period of time. This spike in load can be enough to lead to a flare up of knee pain. To mitigate this risk, it can be helpful to plan a steady progression week to week, if you need help with this, reach out to a coach or professional to get advice on how to increase your physical activity levels, whether this is walking, swimming, running etc.

  • Neglecting resistance training - We know that people often see lifting weights or doing resistance training as an endeavour for those who want too “look good” However, one of the most effective things you can implement to manage knee pain is a resistance training programme. Strength/resistance training has be shown to significantly reduce the likelihood of injury and can help manage the symptoms of knee pain. Again, if you need help with this, reach out to a professional to get a strength programme specific for runners.

  • Lifestyle Management - Sleep, nutrition, hydration, and stress management are the most important here. Poor sleep quality is directly linked to higher pain sensitivity, combine this with poor hydration and nutrition, you really put yourself at risk of developing pain in general, not just knee pain. If you need more help on how to manage your lifestyle, reach out to a professional.

If you are struggling with persistent Knee pain, it would be our advice to arrange a consultation with a Physiotherapist at our clinic. Call 01563262123 to find out more about how Physiotherapy can help with your running injuries.
