Tips to Prevent New Year Resolution Injuries
Reducing the risk of injury is an important part of maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle. Whether you're serious about your sport, or just someone who enjoys being active, taking the time to make sure you have some strategies in place to protect yourself from injury can help you stay active. New Year is such an important time to take this advice. Everyone starts off at 100 miles an hour, chasing their new health and fitness goals. Although thats great, don’t fall into the trap of being injured by the end of January! Here are a few tips for reducing the risk of injuries:
Don’t do too much, too soon - this seems incredibly simple, but for some reason it’s something that repeatedly causes problems. Don’t go from not exercising at all to hitting the gym or running 5 times per week. This is a sure fire way to put yourself on the sidelines by the end of January.
Warm up before physical activity: Although the evidence supporting warm ups for reducing injury isn’t great. We think its sensible to at least pay some attention to starting slow and building intensity in anything you do. This can be walk/jog before you start your run, or doing some sets at a lighter weight first in the gym. It doesn’t have to be fancy. Just don’t sprint out the house, or load your bar in the gym straight away.
Use safe technique: Whether you're lifting weights, running, or playing a sport, using safe technique is essential for preventing injuries. Make sure you understand the correct way to perform each exercise or movement, and seek advice from a qualified coach or trainer if you're unsure.
Wear appropriate gear: Wearing the right gear, such as the right shoes, can help to reducie the risk of injury. Make sure you have the appropriate gear for the activity you're participating in and that it fits properly. E.g comfortable running/walking trainers
Rest and recover: It is important to give your body the time it needs to recover after a workout, Overworking yourself can lead to fatigue, which can increase your risk of injury. Be sure to get enough sleep and allow yourself time to rest and recover.
Seeking help if you feel pain or discomfort. If you start experiencing pain or discomfort while performing an activity, seek help from a professional. This will help you to identify and correct any potential issues before they become serious injuries.
By following these tips and taking the time to properly prepare your body for physical activity, you can reduce your risk of injury and stay on top of your game. Remember that injuries can happen to anyone, regardless of experience or skill level, so it's important to take steps to protect yourself and your body.
