Do you get Shoulder Pain in the Gym? Read this blog...

Shoulder pain when exercising is a common complaint we see a lot at our Physio clinic in Stewarton.

People often complain about their shoulder stopping them from doing things like lifting overhead, press ups, and pull ups. There is nothing more frustrating than wanting to progress in the gym, and being stopped by something like shoulder pain. What’s causing this I hear you ask? Well, that depends on the individual, and often, getting an assessment from a Physio is best. However, the vast majority of shoulder pain that we see, is usually related to the Rotator Cuff. Whether its not working as well as it should, working too much, or acutely injured, its usually involved in some way.

This type of shoulder pain usually presents as pain in the upper arm area. It can also present as pain at the front and back of the shoulder region. We often find that it can disturb sleep due to lying on that side, or letting your arm fall across you. People often struggle with activities of daily living that involve lifting things such as kettles, or items into cupboards. Putting on jackets and taking clothes on and off can often hurt.

On the exercise side of things, people often struggle with things like lifting overhead, press ups, and pull ups.

Can this type of shoulder pain get better? Absolutely! We help people every week get back to doing their activities of daily living and exercise without shoulder pain. It can take some time but with some activity modification, load management and targeted treatment/rehab, we usually see people make a full recovery.
